Traditions concerning the Groom

During the service the groom stands on the right of the bride, this dates back to the days of swords, should any man challenge the groom to the rights of his bride he could draw his sword with his Right hand while hold her with his Left.

Another tradition is carrying the bride over the threshold, this date from way back when it was believed that a new bride was vulnerable to evil spirits and bad luck, so the groom would carry her over the threshold so leaving the bad spirits on the other side. It is also symbolic of leaving her old life behind and being carried into a new one. Another view on this was that a bride does not want to seem eager to give away her purity so the groom would have to gently persuade her by carrying her in.
